”8 Smile – Battle Time!” A Genius Idea by @EddyKing! Interview by @MdotOnTop (@Just_For_Laughs)

During the last three weeks downtown Montreal vibrated to the sounds of laughter during the 30th annual Just for Laughs Festival which was composed of 400 comedians and 250 shows. The Montreal crowd was definitely in full attendance.

However, my attention was focused on Montreal’s own comedian, Eddie King. After several shows, competitions, festivals and galas, King introduced us to his brand new concept on stage, entitled “8 smile”.

King is clearly not the type to catch “cold feet” when it comes time to switch his set from French to the English language, as he amazingly demonstrated at the Just For Laughs Festival.

I had the pleasure of attending all presentations of “8 smile” hosted by Eddy King assisted by Canada’s well known DJ, DJ Dax.

In addition, I had the chance to speak with Eddy King about his genius concept.

Here’s what he had to say:

Mdot: How was your show tonight?
Eddy King: The show went very well! The comedians were extraordinary! Seriously, we rocked the stage, it was really good.

Mdot: Tell us a bit more about your new concept 8 smiles?

Eddy King: I was naturally inspired by the concept of the film “8 Mile”, and wanted to add a humorist twist to it. Basically, I would get the comedians to compete in a head to head format using their best jokes, with a small influence of Hip-Hop delivered by the sounds of DJ Dax.

Mdot: Where did you get the idea and the name?

Eddy King: This is my sequel to the movie “8 Mile”,with Eminem. When asked about “Rap Battling”, the majority of the public will refer to the movie “8 Mile”. I decided to play with the words and add a humor side to it.

Mdot: How does it feel to perform in English?

Eddy King: Personally, I love to perform in English. I love the challenge, simply because it is not my first language. I learned the English language quite late, so I find it very different.

Mdot: In regards to the comedians that were competing head to head on stage, how did you go about choosing them? Did you personally choose them yourself?

Eddy King: I received assistance from the Just For Laughs scalpers. I was offered two comedians from New York, however I was not familiar with them. In regards to the other comedians who participated in “8 smiles”, these are all people that I consider friends in which I have already worked with in the past.

Mdot: What advice would you give to an upcoming comedian in this industry?

Eddy King: You must simply first watch and analyze a lot of comedy shows. There are also a lot of  books that teach us how to become good comedians as well writers. In addition, there is also the National School Humor. Yes it is expensive, but it can be a tremendous help to some.

Mdot: After the Just for Laughs Festival, what are your plans for the rest of the year?

Eddy King: A vacation, but not for too long. ‘Laughs’. I have upcoming shows at Theatre St-Denis in October and my One-man show resumes in December.

Mdot: Would you like to add anything else for the fans?

Eddy King: Yes, I would tell them I love them very much and thank you for their continued support.

Ces trois dernières semaines, le centre-ville de Montréal vibrait aux sons des rires du 30e Festival Juste pour rire avec 400 comédiens, 250 spectacles et les Montréalais étaient au rendez-vous.

Après plusieurs spectacles, concours, galas et festivals, le voici avec un tout nouveau concept sur scène s’intitulé «8 smile».

Eddy King n’a pas froid aux yeux lorsqu’il est temps de performer dans une autre langue comme l’anglais. Il nous l’a bien démontré durant le Festival Juste pour rire.

J’ai eu le plaisir d’assister aux présentations de «8 smile» animé par cet humoriste et accompagné par DJ Dax.

De plus, j’ai eu la chance de pouvoir m’entretenir avec Eddy King sur ce concept de génie.

Voici ce qu’il avait à nous dire:

Mdot : Comment c’est déroulé ton spectacle de ce soir ?

Eddy King : Ça s’est super bien passé. Les comédiens étaient extraordinaires. Franchement, on a fait vibrer la scène, c’était vraiment bon.

Mdot : Parles nous de ton nouveau concept « 8 smile »?

Eddy King : En fait, j’ai un peu repris le concept de « 8 mile », mais j’ai voulu le faire en version humoristique. C’est-à-dire, avec des comédiens qui s’affrontent avec leurs meilleurs   «sets». Puis, j’ai voulu y rajouter une ambiance HipHop/lutte derrière tout ça avec l’aide de DJ Dax.

Mdot : D’où t’es venu l’idée et le nom?

Eddy King : C’est suite au film «8 mile» d’Eminem. Par rapport au «Rap battle», tout le monde a comme référence ce film. Pour ce qui est du nom, c’est un jeu de mots pour reprendre le côté humoristique.

Mdot : Comment trouves-tu le fait de performer en anglais?

Eddy King : Personnellement, j’aime beaucoup performer en anglais. J’adore les defis, car ce n’est pas ma langue première. J’ai appris l’anglais assez tard, donc je trouve sa très différent.

Mdot : Pour ce qui est des comédiens qui s’affrontaient sur scène, d’où viennent-ils? Est-ce que c’est des humoristes que tu as toi-même choisis?

Eddy King : J’ai eu l’aide du scalper de Juste pour rire. On m’a proposé deux humoristes de New York que je ne connaissais pas. Pour ce qui est des autres humoristes qui ont participé à «8 smile», ce sont tous des gens avec qui j’ai déjà travaillés dans le passé ou bien des amis à moi.

Mdot : Quels sont les conseils que tu pourrais donner à un comédien qui commence dans le domaine de l’humour?

Eddy King : Il faut regarder et analyser beaucoup de spectacles d’humour. Il y a plusieurs livres aussi qui nous apprennent comment être un bon comédien et un bon écrivain. De plus, il y a aussi l’École nationale de l’humour, ça coûte cher mais ça peut aider grandement pour certains.

Mdot : Après le Festival Juste pour rire, quels sont tes plans pour le reste de l’année 2012 ?

Eddy King : Vacance, mais pas pour trop longtemps (Rire). J’ai des supplémentaires au Théâtre St-Denis et je reprends ma tournée jusqu’en décembre.

Mdot : Aurais-tu quelque chose à rajouter pour tes fans?

Eddy King : Oui, j’aimerais leur dire que je les aime beaucoup et merci de leurs supports.
